ELKINS — Elkins Post 29 improved to 6-1 in Area 5 play with a 7-3 victory over Jane Lew Wednesday night at Robin Harvey Memorial Field.

Post 29, now 16-12-2 overall, is battling Buckhannon for the top seed in the upcoming Area 5 tourney. Both teams have just one loss ln league play.

“We’re really battling some adversity and injuries right now,” Elkins manager Chris George said. “We’re a little beat up right now and hopefully we can get healthy before the postseason.”

The injury bug stung Post 29 in Wednesday’s contest as starting pitcher Brett Smith had to leave the game in the third inning. He’s expected to be fine, however, according to George.

With Post 29 holding a 2-0 lead, Shayne Liller replaced Smith and limited Post 166 to three runs on three hits over the final 4 1/3 innings. Liller (3-2) struck out two, walked six and hit a batter.

Jane Lew tied the game in the fifth on Levi Fox’s two-run single.

Elkins answered in the home-half of the frame when Justin Fike doubled and Matthew Gainer followed with a triple to score courtesy runner Read Schumacher.

Post 29 blew the game open an inning later with four runs.

Ben McDonald started the rally with a double and moved to third on Luke Swecker’s fly out.

Liller then reached on an error that scored McDonald, Gainer later added a two-run double and Blake Loftis plated Schumacher with a sacrifice fly.

Jane Lew added a run-producing single from Cole Barker in the seventh to conclude the scoring.

Barker was tagged for the loss for Post 166, allowing seven runs — five earned — on 11 hits in 5 1/3 innings. He fanned three, walked four and hit two batters.

Gainer continued his hot hitting at the plate for Elkins, going 3 for 4 with a triple and double. He has five safeties in the past two games. McDonald added a pair of hits.

Teran Allman scored twice for Jane Lew, with Barker, Fox, Drew Kuhn and Chase Freeman accounting for the hits.

Post 29 will travel to Moorefield at 6:30 p.m. today and remain on the road Saturday at Parkersburg for a doubleheader.
