Battlers kick off season tonight at Saginaw Valley

PHILIPPI — The Alderson Broaddus University football team will kick off the season at 7 p.m. today at Saginaw Valley State (Mich.)

The Battlers lost last year’s meeting, 42-24, in Philippi.

Head coach Salvatore Dewalt recently announced Zach Lake, Donovan McNelis, Quade Raley and Matt Jackson as the team captains for the 2018 season.

Lake, a redshirt junior, played all 11 games for the Battlers last season and led the team at 21.5 yards per catch on 26 catches. He also tied for the team lead with six receiving touchdowns.

McNelis comes off a strong redshirt sophomore season earning All-G-MAC first team honors and third team Don Hansen Super Region I honors. He anchored an offensive line that averaged 162.1 rushing per game.

Raley led the G-MAC with 11 sacks and earned an honorable mention All-G-MAC selection. Raley also led the Battlers with 79 tackles a season ago.

Jackson was the Battlers fourth leading tackler in 2017 making 44 stops. He also recorded an interception.

Offensively, Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year and All-American Honorable Mention wide receiver Chad Gailliard returns as a weapon for Saginaw Valley on the outside.

Junior quarterback Ryan Conklin also is back after a solid sophomore campaign.

Senior Michael Alexander will anchor the defense from his linebacker spot after leading the Cardinals with 94 tackles.
