Battlers tumble in opener

Wesleyan women drop road match

PHILIPPI — The Alderson Broaddus men’s soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to Northwood (Mich.) in the Battlers’ season opener Thursday at Multi-Sport Performance Stadium.

The Timberwolves struck first in the contest on a Josh Wates finish off a free kick from Lucas Neves at the 24:42 mark of the first half.

Lirim Shefiku extended the lead with an unassisted tally in the 56th minute. Nino Evola set the final with a goal in the 69th minute.

The Battlers managed five shots and earned four corner kicks. Nevado Elliot paced the Battlers with a pair of shots.

Freshman keeper Rafael Martins made five saves and took the loss.

The Battlers are back in action at 4 p.m. Saturday at home against Saginaw Valley State.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The West Virginia Wesleyan women’s soccer team fell to Slippery Rock, 1-0, to open the season on Thursday in a non-conference contest.

Kaitlyn Barrackman scored the game’s lone goal at the 9:40 mark off an assist from Skye Kramer.

Chelsea Hubner and Ashley Schumacher each played a half in goal for the Lady Bobcats. Schumacher had two saves in the second half.

Slippery Rock held an 11-3 advantage on shots and a 3-1 edge on shots on goal.

The Lady Bobcats will return to action at 7:30 p.m. today at home against Caldwell University.

WVWC is offering free admission to all games this season.
