Bulldogs to host Tucker; Bucs open home slate

Tygarts Valley looks to build on last week’s opening-game victory at Valley Wetzel when Tucker County visits Bulldog Field at 7 p.m. today.

The Bulldogs used 152 yards rushing and three scores from Daniel White in claiming a 33-8 win over the Lumberjacks. Starting running back Jake Tackett was injured just three plays into the game and is status for tonight is questionable.

With Tackett out of the lineup, White and Elijah Scott handed the ball-carrying duties. Scott added 80 yards rushing and a score, while sophomore quarterback Josh Bright completed 4 of 8 passes with a TD pass.

“The boys were really fired up to get a win in our opener,” second-year TV coach Rodney Bright. “We played with a lot of energy and really wore them down.”

Bright said his squad faces a stern challenge from the Mountain Lions, who coasted past Pocahontas County, 18-7, in their opener.

“Tucker County has really had our number over the years,” Bright said. “Coach (A.J.) Rapp does a great job over there and their kids always play hard.”

Junior Liam Hood, who threw for 132 yards and a score last week against the Warriors, directs Tucker County’s offense, which also features senior fullback Cole Rapp and senior receiver Ben Callaway, who was on the receiving end of a 70-yard scoring pass from Hood in the opener.

Ripley (0-1) at B-U (1-0)

Quarterback Ryan Strader will guide the Bucs in their home opener at Freal “Red” Crites Memorial Stadium against Ripley at 7:30 p.m. this evening.

Strader rushed for 141 yards and three scores in last week’s 21-14 victory at Princeton. He also picked off a late Tiger pass to preserve the win.

Senior Dash Davis is another offensive threat for coach Duane Stoeckle’s squad.

The defense is led by senior linebacker Andrew Herron, who forced a fumble in last week’s win.

The Vikings, meanwhile, are coming off a 27-7 setback to Parkersburg South.

R.J. Evans churned for 80 yards rushing in the loss. Quarterback Evan Wheeler hit Evan King for a TD pass for the Vikings’ lone score.

Other games around the area tonight include Pendleton County (1-0) at Petersburg (1-0), Pocahontas County (0-1) at Moorefield (0-1) and Frankfort (1-0) at East Hardy (0-1).
