Grier on Johnny Unitas Watch List

Will Grier

MORGANTOWN –West Virginia University football redshirt senior and Heisman Trophy Award candidate quarterback Will Grier was named to the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation, Inc., Watch List, announced Tuesday by the organization.

Candidates for the nation’s top quarterback award must be a college senior or fourth-year junior on schedule to graduate with their class. Criteria to be considered for the award include character, citizenship, scholastic achievement, leadership qualities and athletic accomplishments.

Grier, the 2018 Big 12 Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and a consensus preseason All-America selection, was the 2017 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and an All-Big 12 Conference performer. He already has been named to the Maxwell Award, Davey O’Brien and Wuerffel Award Watch Lists.

In 2017, he passed for 3,490 yards and 34 touchdowns before his season ended against Texas when he sustained a season-ending hand injury in the first quarter.

His 34 touchdowns were second-most in WVU history, and he threw for 300 or more yards in nine games, setting a school record. He also recorded multiple touchdowns in 10 games and set the school record for throwing five touchdowns in back-to-back games.

Past standout winners of the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award include: Peyton Manning (Tennessee, 1997); Carson Palmer (USC, 2002); Eli Manning (Ole Miss, 2003); Brady Quinn (Notre Dame, 2006); Matt Ryan (Boston College, 2007); Colt McCoy (Texas, 2009); Andrew Luck (Stanford, 2011); Marcus Mariota (University of Oregon, 2014); Connor Cook (Michigan State, 2015); Deshaun Watson (Clemson, 2016) and the 2017 winner, Mason Rudolph (Oklahoma State).
