Senator cross country teams win Route 33 Cup

ELKINS — The Davis & Elkins College men’s soccer team started off the Matt Ellinger era with a 3-1 victory over Salem University Thursday night at Nuttall Field.

Friedrich Peter headed home a corner kick from Niklas Rasch-Hegelund in the ninth minute to make it 1-0.

Pedro Bassin Nunes then smashed home a ball from Rasch-Hegelund in the 25th minute.

Guy Mobeka added a goal to make it 3-0.

The Senators will return to action Tueday in their G-MAC opener at Malone.

Senators take Route 33 Cup

ELKINS — The Davis & Elkins College men’s and women’s cross country team captured the Route 33 Cup Thursday at home.

The Senator men swept the top four positions and had nine of the first 12 finishers in the event, scoring 17 points. West Virginia Wesleyan (44) and Glenville (77) followed.

Hayden Harrison led for more than half the race, as he set a strong pace for the Senators. Teammate Matthew Chapman overtook Harrison, however, and went on to win the 5K event in a time 16:38.3. Harrison was second in a time of 16:42.7.

The Lady Senators, meanwhile, took four of the first eight positions, cruising to the victory with 26 points. Wesleyan finished with 31 points and Glenville with78 points.

D&E’s Danielle Haynes was the top finishers by 48 seconds in a time of 20:22.5.

Elkins native Skylee Watson also ran to a strong fourth-place finish in a time of 21:43.1.
