Benson’s two TD runs help Hornets rally for 14-8 win
PARSONS – Elkins Middle School rallied for a 14-8 win over Tucker Valley in muddy conditions at R.H. Armstrong Memorial Field at Class of 1984 Alumni Stadium on Wednesday night.
The Hornets of first-year coach Eddie Gannon improved to 3-2 on the season. They will be idle next week before traveling to Mannington on Oct. 10.
Trailing 8-0, Aziah Benson gave EMS its first points of the night on a 65-yard run in the second quarter to cut the lead to 8-6 at the intermission.
Benson found the end zone again in the third quarter, busting loose for a 55-yard run and also tacking on the two-point conversion to make it 14-8.
The Wildcats threatened late in the game, driving into Hornet territory before the EMS defense held on downs with six seconds left and allow the offense to run out the clock.
“It was a defensive battle tonight,” Gannon said. “Tucker Valley is a tough team and our defense, especially our linemen and linebackers, played well.”
John Bonner and Steven Collins both had two sacks for the Hornet defense. Gannon also praised the play of his linebackers Sam Roberts, Cole Shreve and Corey Harper.
“I give a lot of credit to our defensive coordinator Phil Isner,” Gannon said. “He had a great game plan and had the kids really prepared.”
