Lady Tigers get by Liberty
CLARKSBURG — The Elkins High School girls soccer team scored two goals in the final three minutes of regulation to earn a 3-1 win over Liberty Tuesday evening in a Big 10 Conference encounter.
The Lady Tigers are now 6-0 overall and 2-0 in Big 10 games. They will return home at 7:30 p.m. Thursday to face Lincoln.
“We didn’t play very well in the first half, and you have to give Liberty credit for taking us out of our game,” said EHS coach Scott Cutright.
“We made some adjustments in the second half and played much better and were able to play our style of soccer.”
The game was scoreless at the intermission before the Lady Tigers took a 1-0 lead 15:00 into the second half when Sofia Triplett scored off an assist by Isabella Karlen.
After the Lady Mountaineers tied the game with 10 minutes left, Susan Riggleman was taken down in the box and Karlen converted the penalty kick to give EHS a 2-1 lead.
With 1:00 left, Triplett scored her second goal of the night to set the final score a 3-1.
Taylor Phillips was in goal for the Lady Tigers, making nine saves.
LHS attempted the lone corner kick of the night.
Liberty 4, Elkins 2
CLARKSBURG — Elkins dropped a 4-2 decision to Liberty Tuesday in Big 10 Conference play.
Michael DiBacco and Liam Gongola scored the goals for the Tigers, who trailed 2-1 at the intermission.
Elkins will return home at 5:30 p.m. Thursday to face Lincoln.
