Tygarts Valley finds a new home
School officially joined the Mason Dixon Conference this school year, will also play in PVC in some sports
MILL CREEK — After not being affiliated with a conference for several years, Tygarts Valley is now a current member of the Mason Dixon Conference, along with rejoining the Potomac Valley Conference for some sports.
Tygarts Valley will play in the Mason Dixon Conference in football, boys and girls basketball, volleyball and softball, while being a part of both the Mason Dixon Conference and the PVC in baseball, boys and girls track and field and golf and just in the PVC in cheerleading due to the Mason Dixon not offering a championship for that sport.
“It really made sense for us to join the Mason Dixon Conference,” TV athletic director Mike DiPasquale said. “We were already playing a majority of the schools in the league and four of the them are in the same section with us.”
DiPasquale said traveling, especially in the winter months, was also a factor in joining the league.
“Most of the schools can be reached nearly all the way by the interstate,” he said. “When we were in the PVC, we had to take a lot of trips over the mountains in the winter and that really put our student-athletes and coaches in tough predicaments.”
Tygarts Valley chose to leave the PVC approximately five years ago, partly because of football.
“We approached the PVC and wanted to remain in the conference in all sports but not football,” DiPasquale said. “At the time, our football team was not competitive in the league.
“(The PVC) wanted us to continue to play in all sports, including football, and the decision was then made to go independent.”
DiPasquale believes playing in a conference benefits the student-athletes — both on and off the field.
“When the Mason Dixon Conference offered us an invite last year, we discussed it, we met all of the requirements and decided it was the best for our school,” he said. “I think we can be competitive in all sports and our athletes will be eligible immediately for all-conference recognition.”
Mason Dixon Conference members include Clay-Battelle, Trinity Christian, Cameron, South Harrison, Notre Dame, Hundred, Paden City, Valley (Wetzel) and Hundred.
Tygarts Valley’s inclusion gives the league 10 schools.
