Urbana cruises past ’Cats, 42-10

URBANA, Ohio — Urbana raced out to a 21-0 lead in the first half and scored the final 21 points of the game to take a 42-10 decision over West Virginia Wesleyan on Thursday night at UU Stadium.

With the win, the Blue Knights improve to 3-1 (2-1 MEC) on the year. The Bobcats fell to 0-4 and 0-4 MEC.

Urbana held West Virginia Wesleyan to -3 yards rushing in the game, but gave up 385 to the Bobcats through the air. The Blue Knights had a more balanced offense piling up 257 yards on the ground and 147 more through the air for 402 yards of total offense. WVWC was plagued by four lost fumbles, including one that was returned 84 yards for a touchdown by Urbana.

Isaiah Young had 19 carries for 86 yards and scored two first half touchdowns to help stake the Blue Knights to the early lead. Bailey Wallen added six carries for a game-high 89 yards and also had a touchdown. Eddie Stockett was 8-of-12 for 128 yards through the air. Jesse Bray had six catches for 68 yards and had one touchdown.

Mikal Toliver had eight tackles to lead UU on defense, including two sacks and two others for a loss. Jamari Collins was the UU player who scooped the WVWC fumble and returned it 84 yards for a touchdown. DeArmon Lewis and Tobias Haley each added eight tackles.

Bobcat quarterback Luke Casey was 32 of 47 for 385 yards with one touchdown but was sacked five times. Jujuan Linzy had 10 catches for 98 yards. Anthony Hill had a team-high eight tackles and Brady Walker recorded six solo stops for the Bobcats.

Charleston 23, Fairmont State 17

FAIRMONT –Charleston built an early lead in the first half and held off Fairmont State late in a 23-17 win over the Falcons on Thursday night at Duvall-Rosier Field. The win keeps Charleston unbeaten on the year at 4-0, 4-0 MEC), while Fairmont State (3-1, 2-1 MEC) was handed its first loss of the season.

FSU took the opening kickoff inside UC territory but settled for a field goal. Charleston took the lead at the end of the first quarter as Damion May led a seven-play, 71-yard drive down the field and capped it with a 15-yard slant to Tyreik McAllister. The PAT failed, though, so UC settled for the 6-3 lead.

Khalik Hamlin ripped a 47-yard run deep into UC territory on Fairmont State’s next possession, but Jonte Pooler punched the ball out and the Golden Eagles recovered in the end zone. UC traveled 80 yards in nine plays and May punched it in from the one-yard line to go ahead 13-3. May would score again from the one with 2:45 to go to push the lead to 20-3. Fairmont State tried to get a score before halftime, but the drive stalled and Charleston capitalized and added a field goal to take a 23-3 lead into the break.

With the score still 23-3 midway through the third quarter, an eight-yard punt put Fairmont State in business at the Charleston 24. The Falcons were able to capitalize as Hamlin took it in from two yards out. FSU was able to stop Charleston and got the ball back, but Amadi registered his third pick of the day in the end zone to stop the threat.

The Golden Eagles fumbled on their next possession, and Fairmont State added another TD to cut the deficit to 23-17 with still 9:22 left in the game. UC went three-and-out and gave the ball back to FSU, but the Falcons were forced to punt as well. Charleston took over with 5:24 left in the game and managed to pick up three first downs that allowed it to take a knee and not allow Fairmont State one final opportunity.
