Big 10 cross country championships being held today at D&E

ELKINS — Some of the top runners and teams in the Class AA ranks will take part in the Big 10 Conference Championships set for today at Davis & Elkins College.

The boys race was set to begin at 10 a.m., followed by the girls at 11 a.m.

Four teams among the top 10 in the runwv.power boys’ rankings will be in action, including Fairmont Senior and Bridgeport, who are second and third, respectively.

Philip Barbour (fifth) and East Fairmont (seventh) are other squads to watch, along with Preston, which is ranked eighth in Class AAA.

The individual title should also come down to runners from those respective schools.

Bridgeport junior Jackson Jacobs, Fairmont Senior’s Caleb Carlson and Tavian Richardson, both seniors, Philip Barbour junior Noah Ward and Preston junior Cole Friend are among the favorites.

Host team Elkins and coach Matt Lewis will look for strong outings from senior Read Schumacher and freshman Lucas Anger.

Junior Samuel Walker headlines the Buckhannon-Upshur squad.

For the girls, Bridgeport and Fairmont Senior are also the favorites. East Fairmont and Preston, ranked sixth in triple-A, could also factor in the final team standings.

East is led by sophomore Erykah Christopher, while senior Julia Muller anchors Bridgeport. Philip Barbour junior Olivia Frye could also emerge as a contender for individual honors.

The Preston freshmen duo of Allie Martin and Chloe Start should also be factors in the individual race.

Sophomores Lexi Morici and Addie Berdine, meanwhile, have both had solid seasons for the Lady Tigers. Senior Tiffany Williams looks for a strong outing for B-U.

Other schools competing today include Grafton, Lewis County, Liberty, Lincoln, North Marion and Robert C. Byrd.

After today’s competition, area teams will prepare for next Thursday’s regional meets, with Elkins competing in the Class AA-A Region II meet at Doddridge County, Philip Barbour in the Region I meet at St. Marys and B-U in the Class AAA Region 1 meet at Brooke High School.

The state meet will follow on Oct. 27 at Cabell Midland High School.
