Second-half rally falls just short for EMS at Mannington

RACHEL – A furious second-half rally fell just short for Elkins Middle School in a 30-22 loss to Mannington on Wednesday night.

The Hornets trailed 30-6 at halftime before scoring late in the third quarter to cut the lead to 30-14 after the two-point conversion and again with three minutes left in regulation to cut the lead to 30-22.

EMS then had a chance to recover the onside kick, but two Hornet players collided and the hosts were able to take possession and run out the clock after picking up a first down on a third-and-12 conversion.

“Our kids showed a lot of resilience tonight,” first-year EMS coach Eddie Gannon said. “We made some halftime adjustments and were able to get back into the game.”

Aziah Benson had 114 yards rushing and an 86-yard TD run for the Hornets, while Sam Roberts added 107 yards on the ground with a 28-yard score and John Bonner a 2-yard TD run.

Benson was also 3 of 3 passing for 28 yards after starting quarterback Chase Workman was injured in the first half.

Roberts also has 10 tackles on defense.

EMS (3-3) will play its final home game of the season at 6:30 p.m. next Wednesday against Robert L. Bland.
