EMS girls soccer squad wraps up successful season

ELKINS — The Elkins Middle School girls soccer program recently wrapped up a successful season in the inaugural campaign of coach Levi Fletcher.

The girls finished the season with an 8-3-1 record, including a signature win over rival Buckhannon snapping an eight-season losing skid.

The weather played an unfortunate role in the season, claiming four games that were not able to be made up and shortening one game to 25 minutes.

Fletcher commented, “Overall, the girls played really well, they showed a lot of improvement from the beginning of the season until the end and were able to use a possession based strategy to control ball possession during most games.

“I am really proud of this group of girls,” he said. “The eighth-graders stepped up and led by a positive example and helped the team bond and play as an unselfish unit throughout the season. Our back line play was outstanding, with several girls stepping up to solidify the defense and limiting most teams to very few shots.

“On the field, I couldn’t have asked for a much better season,” Fletcher said. “I wish the eighth-graders all the best as they move on next year to the high school level.”

Season stats include 23 goals for and only 10 against, with seven shutouts by veteran goal keeper Kaelyn Cogar.

The leading goal scorer for the year was Kennedy Hart with six goals, followed by Layla Fletcher with four, Alexa Price with three, Laney Fletcher with three, Lydia Blackburn with two, and Maddie Belan, Haylie Doyle, Darby Bailey, Hannah Cutright and Gracelin Corley with one goal each.
