Petersburg girls drop pair of games in tourney
ROMNEY — Petersburg opened the season with a pair of losses in the Hampshire Tip-Off Tournament over the weekend.
Host Hampshire handed the Vikings a 71-49 setback on Friday night, while Sherando (Va.) survived a late Petersburg flurry to pick up a closely contested 51-50 win on Saturday.
The Vikings fell behind, 14-6, after the first quarter in Friday’s contest and continued to trail with the Lady Trojans up 36-17 at the half.
Hampshire carried a 64-35 cushion into the fourth period.
Petersburg sophomore Jenna Burgess had 12 points in the setback, hitting 6 of 8 from the charity stripe.
Mackenzie Kitzmiller and Mickala Taylor, a pair of freshmen, inked eight points apiece, while senior Hannah Moyers chipped in with six points.
Sherando used an early pace to be up 14-6 after the first stanza on Saturday before building the lead to 28-15 at the break.
Petersburg cut into the deficit to only trail by six (36-30) after a productive third frame.
The Vikings outscored Sherando, 20-15, in the fourth quarter, but enough damage had been done earlier by Sherando as it grabbed the one-point win.
Burgess again led all scorers for Petersburg with 15 point.
Reece Hedrick from the senior class put up 11 points while shooting 3 for 4 at the free-throw line. Mackenzie Weasenforth, also a PHS senior, along with Kitzmiller both notched six points.
Petersburg is slated to be on the road Tuesday at Elkins High School as the Lady Tigers will open their varsity slate at home.
Junior varsity action is slated for approximately 5:45 p.m., while varsity matters are set for a 7:30 p.m. tip off inside Richard P. Simmons Memorial Gymnasium.
