Pocahontas County, Moorefield girls win

HINTON — For the third time since 2003, the Class A, No. 8 Pocahontas County Lady Warriors will play in the championship game in the Rogers Oil Classic played at Summers County High School.

The Lady Warriors (3-0) topped Webster County, 68-15, on Friday for a spot in the championship game. Pocahontas County outscored Webster in all four quarters, holding a 13-2 lead after the first. The Lady Warriors took the second quarter, 15-3, the third (24-2) and the fourth (16-8).

The Lady Warriors were led by junior Laila Calhoun who scored 14 points, grabbed six rebounds and had three steals. Calhoun was also 4 for 4 at the foul line. Sophomore Sienna Bircher chipped in 12 points, five steals and three assists and senior Brianna Hefner added eight rebounds and six steals.

In total, 10 Lady Warriors scored points and the team grabbed 33 rebounds; 18 steals; and 20 assists. Webster County (1-3) turned the ball over 39 times to Pocahontas County’s 22.

The Lady Warriors will take on Class A, No. 7 Summers County in the title tilt at 7:45 p.m. today at Summers County High School.

Moorefield advances

PETERSBURG — Moorefield advanced to the title game of the Petersburg Tip Off Tournament with a 65-28 win over Pendleton County on Friday night.

The Yellow Jackets will face host Petersburg at 7:30 p.m. today in the title game. The Vikings defeated Union in Friday’s other game.

Lindsey Rinker had 15 points, Lexi Gilhuys 14 and Remi Hinkle 12 for Moorefield, which led 37-8 at the intermission.

Pendleton County and Union will square off at 6 p.m. today in the consolation contest.
