D&E rallies to knock off Salem
ELKINS – Trevor English tossed in 24 points to lead three players in double figures as Davis & Elkins College claimed a 77-72 win over Salem University Wednesday night in non-conference play at the McDonnell Center.
Dominic Scott-Robins added 14 and former Elkins High School standout Logan Phillips chipped in with 11.
The Senators rallied to take a 37-34 lead at the intermission before the Tigers tied the game at 58-58 on a 3-pointer by Fonz Hale with 8:36 remaining in the game.
But D&E then went on a 7-0 run and never lost the lead again.
A jumper by Robert Bonar, a 3-point play from English and Phillips’ layup accounted for the points during the surge that treated the hosts to a 65-58 advantage with 6:18 left.
Salem again rallied to cut the deficit to one, at 67-66, but D&E outscored the visitors 10-6 over the final 1:51 to earn the five-point victory.
English and James Rider, who connected on a key 3-pointer at the 1:21 mark to extend the Senators’ lead to 70-66, added free throws down the stretch, while Bonar sealed the deal with two from the charity line with three seconds remaining to make it a five-point cushion.
Malique Ross led Salem with 17 points, followed by Malik Toppin and Hale with 12 apiece, and Ferlandis Penny with 10.
Both teams collected 36 rebounds. English and Scott-Robins led the winners with eight each.
Penny completed a double-double with 10 caroms for the Tigers, who are now 10-7.
Marcus Friend added eight assists and Phillips four steals for D&E.
The Senators jumped out to an 8-0 lead before Salem erupted for 23 unanswered points to take a 15-point lead with 7:42 left in the first half.
D&E answered with 29-11 surge to lead by three at the break.
The Senators (3-10) will remain home at noon Saturday to face Trevecca Nazarene for a G-MAC tilt.
