Lady Bucs coast to win over Elkins
Fast start lifts B-U to 60-35 road victory
ELKINS — A red-hot start coupled with Brooklyn Maxwell’s 14 points helped power Buckhannon-Upshur to a 60-35 win over Elkins Friday night in Big 10 Conference action at Richard P. Simmons Memorial Gymnasium.
The Lady Buccaneers, who improved to 14-7 with the win, wasted little time getting started in the contest.
Senior Leigh Ann Bennett’s steal and layin at the 5:28 mark gave the visitors and early 11-0 cushion.
Maxwell got the surge started by scoring the game’s first five points.
Buckhannon-Upshur’s biggest lead of the quarter came at the 2:25 mark when a Maxwell 3-pointer made it 23-7.
The Lady Bucs, who led 26-12 at the end of the first, continued to hold a double-digit lead throughout the second quarter and took a 35-20 lead into the half.
Buckhannon-Upshur all but sealed the deal with a 9-2 run to open the third quarter as Sydney Fletcher’s score in the paint at the 4:02 mark made it 44-22.
Bennett followed Maxwell in the scoring column with 12 points.
Freshman Shelby McDaniels also reached double digits for the Lady Buccaneers with 10 points.
Sarah Riggleman led the Lady Tigers, who are now 7-14, with six points, five rebounds and two steals.
