ELKINS – A late Davis & Elkins College rally fell just short in a 97-95 setback to Ohio Valley Thursday night in G-MAC play at the McDonnell Center.

The Senators (6-17, 3-12 G-MAC) trailed by eight, at 95-87, with :28 remaining in regulation before a 3-pointer by Marcus Friend and a pair of free throws from Emre Yildirim cut the Fighting Scots’ lead to 95-92 inside of 10 seconds to play.

But Christian Alley knocked down a pair of free throws to seal the deal.

A trey by D&E’s James Rider just before the horn made it a two-point cushion at game’s end.

After leading 51-48 at the break, the Senators built a six-point advantage after back-to-back baskets by Edmund Parker and Trevor English made it 58-52 with 16:05 left in the second half.

Ohio Valley then went on a 24-9 run to build a 76-67 advantage with just under 9:00 left.

D&E, however, answered with a 13-2 run of its own, pulling ahead, 80-78, on a pair of free throws from Friend with 5:18 remaining.

But the Fighting Scots (9-13, 4-12) took the lead for good after breaking an 80-80 deadlock on a free throw from Cole Plants, which started a game-deciding 7-0 run.

English fired in 26 points, grabbed 20 rebounds, dished out five assists and blocked two shots to lead the Senators, while Friend chipped in 21 points and seven boards and Parker 18 points.

D&E canned nearly 50 percent of its field-goal attempts on the night.

Ohio Valley was led by Kenneth Miller’s 23 points. Alley contributed 19 points and eight rebounds, Ty Dobson 17 points and Parker Black 16 points and eight assists.

D&E will travel to Ohio Dominican at 3 p.m. Saturday for another conference contest.
