Phillips’ last-second shot lifts D&E

ELKINS – Logan Phillips’ layup just before time expired lifted Davis & Elkins College to a thrilling 73-71 win over Malone University Saturday afternoon at the McDonnell Center.

With the game tied at 71-71, Phillips worked his way through the Pioneer defense and delivered the game-winning shot.

In a close G-MAC encounter throughout the day, Malone carried a 35-34 lead into the intermission.

The game was tied on four different occasions over the first 10:00 of the second half, and the Senators later took a 65-62 lead on layups from Edmund Parker and James Rider with 4:13 left in regulation.

The advantage for the hosts grew to five, at 69-64, after Trevor English jumper with 2:17 remaining.

But the Pioneers answered with a trey and jumper from Nate Sheppard to tie the game at 69-69 with 38 seconds left.

A jumper by Phillips was answered by a layup from Sheppard with just six seconds remaining to make it a 71-all deadlock and set up Phillips for the game winner with a second showing on the game clock.

English led D&E with 15 points, followed by Parker with 11 and Patrick Wilburn with 10.

Tyler Twyman and Marcus Friend added nine points each, while Phillips, an Elkins High School product, tallied seven points.

Marcus Ernst led Malone with 20 points. Sheppard and Bryce Butler, who hit a late basket to sink Alderson Broaddus on Thursday night, added 14 each.

D&E (6-15, 3-11 G-MAC) will travel to Salem University at 7 p.m. today for a rescheduled game.

Walsh 81, ABU 74

PHILLIPPI – Walsh outscored Alderson Broaddus, 28-19, over the final 8:40 of regulation to take an 81-74 G-MAC win Saturday at Rex Pyles Arena.

The Battlers took a 55-53 lead on a 3-pointer by Mike Davis before the Cavaliers went on a 22-15 run to take control.

JT Shumate fired in 37 points to pace Walsh.

Davis led AB with 30 points, followed by Coye Campbell with 20.

The Battlers will host Ohio Dominican at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday for another G-MAC encounter.
