Wildcats open by splitting two

MARTINSBURG– The Pendleton County baseball team opened the season with a doubleheader split at Spring Mills on Saturday.

The Wildcats claimed the lidlifter, 19-6, and dropped the nightcap,13-2.

Both games ended in the fifth inning due to the mercy rule.

Timmy Thorne allowed three hits and three runs over three innings to earn the win on the mound in the opener.

He also helped his cause at the plate by going 3 for 4, while Josh Wagoner was 1 for 3 with a triple and four RBIs, Grant Evick 2 for 4 with a triple and three RBIs and Evan Kyle 2 for 2 with three RBIs.

Kole Puffenberger was saddled with the loss in the second game for the Wildcats.

He went three innings, allowing five hits and eight runs, just two being earned, and fanning three.

Jared Lambert, Wagoner and Aiden Cooney all had singles in the loss.

“We came out and put the ball into play in the first game,” Pendleton County coach Sam Yokum said. “But in the second game we booted the ball around, made some mistakes and (Spring Mills) turned it up a notch.

“Overall, it was a good day of baseball for playing our first games of the season.”

The Wildcats improved to 2-1 with a 13-3 win over Bath County in five innings on Monday.

Adien Cooney earned the win for Pendleton from the mound throwing four innings. He struck out three batters, allowed 6 hits and two earned runs. The Wildcats were led from the plate by Thorne going four for four with a triple, two doubles and four RBIs. Puffenberger went one for three from the plate with a double and one RBI. Cameron Kisamore went two for three with two RBIs.

The Wildcats will be back in action 5 p.m. Wednesday when they host the Pocahontas County Warriors.
