PHILIPPI — Berkeley Springs put the pressure on Philip Barbour with an early 3-0 lead to start a first-round Class AA Region I Section 1 elimination game on Monday.

The Lady Colts erupted in the fourth inning to take a lasting 6-3 advantage before tacking on 5 insurance runs in the home side of the fifth frame to activate the 8-run mercy rule, and advance further into the post season.

Emma Kennedy sparked Philip Barbour with a lead-off home run to center on the first pitch of the fourth inning to pull the Colts closer with a 3-1 deficit still to overcome.

Marissa Schiefelbein singled to get aboard before Shelby Collins dinged a run producing double. Jess Metheney tripled to bring Collins in for a 3-3 tie ballgame.

Marlee Mincey grounded into a fielder’s choice to help Metheney reach home for the eventual winning run.

Erica Simon kept the rally going with a two-bagger followed by an RBI double from the bat of Lilley Criss. Sara Simon singled to bring Criss in for a 6-3 Colt advantage.

Sara Simon, a freshman, went a complete 5 innings on the hill to get the win. She fanned 7 while walking a pair, and allowed 2 earned runs on 7 hits.

Mincey doubled to score Hailee Poling in the fifth inning to push the PB lead out to 7-3. Criss with an RBI single scored Erica Simon before the visitors’ errors caught up with them in the final side of the contest.

Philip Barbour improved to 16-11, a school-best record, breaking the previous mark of 10-10, set in the 2018 season a year ago.

Next up for the Lady Colts is a trip to Petersburg to take on the 25-3 Lady Vikings on Wednesday with a first-pitch time of 5 p.m. in Grant County.
