TENNERTON — Logan Bailey pitch five strong innings and helped his own cause at the plate with a solo home run as Buckhannon downed Elkins 3-1 Thursday in Area 5 American Legion baseball action at William E. Phillips Memorial Field.

Bailey, a recent Buckhannon-Upshur High School graduate, allowed just three hits, struck out three and walked three in earning the victory for Post 7, which improved to 3-4 with the win.

Buckhannon jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning.

Bailey homered with one out for the first run, while the other score came around when Alek Seech doubled and scored on passed ball.

Post 29 (5-7) cut the lead to 2-1 in the fifth inning when Read Schumacher singled with two outs and scored on a Brett Smith double.

Post 7 tacked on an insurance run in the sixth inning as Casey Hamner collected a run-producing double.

Hamner pitched the final two innings and earned the save for Buckhannon.

He allowed just two hits and struck out one.

Gage Bibey suffered the loss for Elkins in six innings of work. He scattered six hits, struck out seven and walked one.

Schumacher has two hits and scored a run to lead Post 29 at the plate.

“Buckhannon deserved to win, they had some timely hits and their pitchers threw strikes,” Elkins manager Chris George said. “We have to do a better job offensively because you’re not going to win many games scoring one run.”

Elkins will travel to Glenville to face Braxton County in another Area 5 contest today at 6 p.m. at the Sue Morris Baseball Complex.

Post 29 will remain on the road at Bridgeport on Thursday and will travel to Parkersburg on Saturday for a twin-bill against the defending state champions.

Buckhannon will travel to Morgantown on Thursday for a 7 p.m. matchup and return home on Friday to battle Braxton County.
