Elkins Post 29 set to visit Post 7 tonight in Area 5 play

The Inter-Mountain file photo Buckhannon Post 7 entertains Elkins Post 29 today for an Area 5 matchup at William E. Phillips Memorial Field.

ELKINS — With the 2019 version of the Pizza Hut Hillbilly Hardball Classic in the books, Elkins Post 29 will begin Area 5 action today at Buckhannon Post 7.

Game time is set for 7 p.m. at William E. Phillips Memorial Field on the campus of Buckhannon-Upshur High School.

Elkins went 2-2 in the Hardball Classic and is now 5-6 on the season.

Post 29 captured wins over Piqua (Ohio) and Florida Gulf Coast White during the tourney, while falling to Beckley Post 32 and Morgantown Post 2.

Buckhannon, meanwhile, enters today’s contest with a 2-4 mark.

Post 7 compiled a record of 1-3 in the Hardball Classic, defeating Ceredo-Kenova, 3-0, in a rain-shortened contest and falling to Charleston Post 20, Fairmont Post 17 and Mifflin County (Pa.).

Top hitters early into the 2019 campaign for Post 29 include West Virginia Tech signee Matthew Gainer, who went 4 for 4 in the win over Piqua, and Philip Barbour product Gage Bibey.

Bibey cracked a grand slam against the Ohio squad.

Glenville State recruit Nick Calef-Boring and former B-UHS standout Taylor Whitehair are players to watch for in the Buckhannon lineup.

Whitehair just completed his freshman season at Wingate University.
