Hardball Classic set to begin today

A total of 36 teams from five different states competing in annual baseball tourney

ELKINS – A record number 36 teams from five different states are competing in the 2019 Pizza Hut Hillbilly Hardball Classic which gets underway today.

The field is broken down in six different divisions — Blue, Black, Orange, Green, Purple and Red in a round-robin format.

The top four teams advance to Sunday’s championship round.

The semifinals and championship game will take place at Robin Harvey Memorial Field in Elkins.

Competing in the Blue Division will be Elkins Post 29, Morgantown Post 2, Latrobe (Pa.) Jethawks, Beckley Post 32, Florida Gulf Coast White and Piqua (Ohio) Post 184.

Black Division squads include Buckhannon Post 7, Mifflin County (Pa.) Post 287, Charleston Post 20, Fairmont Post 17, Ceredo-Kenova Post 93 and Florida Gulf Coast Green.

Clarksburg Post 13, the Blennerhassett Bears, Braxton County Post 33, Summersville Post 131, Marietta (Ohio) Post 64 and Morgantown Junior Legion will comprise the Green Division.

The Purple Division includes Weston Post 4, Sissonville Post 94, Fairmont Post 17 Junior Legion, Bridgeport Post 68 Junior Legion, Shinnston Post 31 and Florida Gulf Coast Developmental.

Moorefield Post 64, South Charleston Post 94, Moundsville Post 64, Garrett (Md.) Post 71/214, Clearfield (Pa.) Post 6 and Greenville (Ohio) Post 140 are the Orange Division squads.

In the Red Division, Bridgeport Post 68, Connellsville (Pa.) Post 301, Pemberville (Ohio) Post 33, Bushy Run (Pa.) Post 260, Parkersburg Post 15 and Jefferson County (Ohio) Post 33 will do battle.

Sites for the Hardball Classic include Robin Harvey Memorial Field and Davis & Elkins College in Elkins, Buckhannon-Upshur High School in Tennerton, Philip Barbour High School and Alderson Broaddus University in Philippi, South Harrison High School in Lost Creek, Lewis County High School in Weston and Bridgeport High School in Bridgeport.
