Post 29 topples Braxton

Elkins pounds out 15 hits to back Gainer

GLENVILLE — Matthew Gainer pitched a complete-game three-hitter to help lead Elkins to a 12-1 win over Braxton County Wednesday in Area 5 American Legion baseball action at the Sue Morris Baseball Complex on the campus of Glenville State College.

Gainer struck out a season-high 10 batters in the contest and didn’t issue a walk in running his record to 2-1 on the season.

“Matthew was calm, cool and collect out on the mound tonight,” Elkins manager Chris George said. “He had command of all his pitches and threw a terrific game.”

Gainer had plenty of run support in the contest as Post 29 (6-7, 1-1 Area 5) pounded out a season-high 15 hits in the game. Brett Smith led the way with three hits and two RBIs, while Gainer helped his cause by driving in three runs on a pair of hits.

“We came out and hit the ball well the entire night,” George said. “We were focused and it showed at the plate. We just need to continue to have good at-bats like we did tonight.”

Will Knight, Read Schumacher, Gage Bibey and Remington Stanley all finished with two hits each for Elkins. One of Knight’s hits was an inside-the-park homer. Cory Reed chipped in with a pair of RBIs.

Cody Dobbins suffered the loss for Post 33 (2-4) in three innings of work. Dobbins gave up four runs on six hits, while walking two and striking out none. He had one hit at the dish and drove in a run.

Post 29 will return to action at 7 p.m. today at Bridgeport.
