Elkins Babe Ruth 14-year-olds to host event, 13s at Beckley today
ELKINS — A pair of Elkins Elks Babe Ruth League All-Star teams will be suiting up for state tournament competition this weekend.
Both the Elkins 13-year-old All-Stars and the 14-year-old All-Stars will begin state play today, with the older group having the luxury of hosting the tourney.
Lewis County, Berkeley County (Little Falls) and Huntington Southeastern will invade Elkins for the 14-year-old tournament, which will be held at Robin Harvey Memorial Field.
Opening games today include Berkeley County vs. Lewis County at 5 p.m. and Elkins against Huntington Southeastern at 8 p.m.
Action will continue on Saturday with a winner’s bracket contest slated to begin at 1 p.m., followed by a pair of elimination games at 3:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. The title game is set for Sunday.
“We’re excited to see a couple of new state Babe Ruth teams represented in this year’s tournament,” Elkins Babe Ruth President Brad Schumacher said. “Little Falls and Lewis County are new to Babe Ruth and join Huntington Southeastern, which has been a long-standing competitor. I can’t wait to see how we do competing against other leagues. We should be very competitive.”
Team members for the Elkins 14-year-old squad include: Riley Tackett, Garrett Gibson, Noah Armstrong, Trenton Wilfong, Mason Halfin, Peyton Casey, Brandon Mahoney, Gabe Skidmore, Tristan Kirk, Derrick Gear and Bryer Currence. Ralph Bennett is the manager and he will be assisted by Josh Halfin and Lucas Cutright.
The Elkins 13-year-olds, meanwhile, will travel the Beckley for their tournament. Elkins will face host squad Beckley in its opener at 7 p.m. today.
Team members for the Elkins 13-year-old All-Stars include, Jaiden Bailey, Cameron Biller, Gavin Carr, Seth Currence, Andrew D’Angelo, Gage Huffman, Mason Kisamore, Matthew Pratt, Ethan Roseneau, Cole Shreve, Elliott Smith and Rylan Wymer.
The team is managed by Chris Broughton. Cecil Winans and Dennis Wymer are his assistant coaches.
