Top five clash set for Friday night

No. 4 Tygarts Valley will visit second-rated Pendleton in ‘A’ battle

MILL CREEK — It will be a battle of top five and unbeaten teams this Friday night when No. 4 Tygarts Valley ventures to Franklin to square off against second-rated Pendleton County.

The 5-0 Wildcats, despite a win at Tucker County this past Friday, dropped from the top spot in the Class A WVSSAC ratings released on Tuesday.

Doddridge County (5-0) is now No. 1 in Class A.

The Bulldogs, off to their best start since 1989 with a 5-0 mark, remained fourth after winning a dramatic 35-33 decision over Richwood last Thursday, stopping a two-point conversion with no time remaining in regulation.

Midland Trail (5-1) is third and Williamstown (5-1) fifth to round out the top five.

Moorefield (4-2) is 13th and East Hardy (3-2) is tied with Clay-Battelle for 16th.

Cabell Midland (6-0) is No. 1 in Class AAA, Parkersburg South (6-0) and three-time state champion Martinsburg (6-0) are tied for second, Musselman (5-1) is fourth and Spring Valley (5-1) fifth.

Defending champion Fairmont Senior (5-0), Keyser (6-0), Poca (6-0), Bridgeport (5-1) and Wyoming East (5-0) comprise the top five in double-A.

Other Big 10 Conference schools among the top 16 include Lewis County (10th), Liberty (13th) and North Marion (tied for 14th).

The top 16 teams in each class qualify for the playoffs.
