Always play like you have no tomorrow

One of the simplest things to do in life is to watch something happen, or hear about it. Better is being involved in it, and having a “say so” in the result can be satisfying, too. It’s easy to reflect on so much these days with the amount of information that is so easily attained, no matter how confusing it may be. Sorting it all out can be difficult, however.

Youth and prep sports give many a chance to unplug and keep it simple. The world is made up of very minute developments.

Those time-ticking experiences include the games being played by young, aspiring student-athletes everywhere, including here in West Virginia.

Every student and adult in the schoolhouse has an influence on the big picture. It is important to remember the original reason for competition — it makes us better.

Success is the goal for a sports team, though it may be measured on many levels. It is all about levels though, in sports, and especially in life. The levels can be hard to climb, and can be final when the universe has its say.

I had a very much unwelcome and shocking experience this past weekend, when a truly inspiring person I have known since I was 17 was gone in an instant due to a vehicle accident. I will not mention any names. She would not want this to be a sad story.

Grief runs deep, especially for those who were closer than I to this special person. I did know her quite well with the experiences we shared. She may be gone from our grasps, but her original message has always been clear, without a doubt. Love one another and do your best while you have the time to do so.

Simply put, it is a competition out there, and time is of the essence.

I simply know that this departed friend of so many would give this advice: “Play every down or sequence like it was your last, because it is the only way to keep improving, folks.”
