Alzheimer’s Walk registration underway

On Sept 21, residents from Elkins and surrounding areas will join together to end Alzheimer’s at the 2013 Walk to End Alzheimer’s at the River’s Bend Park in Elkins. This annual event raises critical funds and awareness to support supportive programs and services for families facing Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia and support critical research to one day end this tragic disease.

The Elkins Walk to End Alzheimer’s will take place at River’s Bend Park in Elkins. Teams and individual participants can register online at alz.org/wv up to the day of the event or in person beginning at 8:30 a.m. The walk will begin at 10 a.m. The local committee has set an ambitious goal to raise $20,000 to surpass last year’s fundraising efforts.

The Promise Garden Ceremony will again take place this year. The ceremony allows each participant to write a message on specially-colored flowers.

The flowers mark their commitment to honor a promise to remember, to care and to fight Alzheimer’s disease. Through color, this new element will represent the diverse reasons participants have joined.

Whether participation in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s is personal, professional or a mix of both, the reason why is the same to give hope to people living with the disease, their caregivers and loved ones. Alzheimer’s disease is progressive, debilitating and ultimately fatal. There are an estimated 48,000 West Virginians and more than 5 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease. Additional information regarding the Walk to End Alzheimer’s and how to sign up can be found at alz.org/wv or by contacting Wendy Hamilton at 800-272-3900.

The Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support and research. Starting in 1989, the Alzheimer’s Association mobilized millions of Americans in the Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk; now the Alzheimer’s Association is continuing to lead the way with the Walk to End Alzheimer’s.
