J.F. Allen Company wins national award

The National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) announced that J.F. Allen Co. of Buckhannon has won a 2012 Quality in Construction Award for excellence in construction of an asphalt pavement. The company received its award Feb. 13 at a ceremony during the association’s 58th Annual Meeting in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The Quality in Construction Award recognizes asphalt pavements of excellence. “The Quality in Construction Award recognizes paving jobs completed in line with best practices and standards known to yield high-quality asphalt pavements,” Kurt Bechthold, 2012 chairman of the NAPA board of directors, said. “This award demonstrates the high quality of work J.F. Allen Company is achieving.”

J.F. Allen Company won the award for the mill and overlay of the runway at North Central West Virginia Regional Airport in Bridgeport.Work included an 800-foot extension of the existing runway and connecting taxiway, milling of the existing pavement, and the application of a 2-inch overlay atop the extension and original runway. The airport was shut down for 95 hours to complete the work, which demanded careful planning and round-the-clock operations.

J.F. Allen Company incorporated green practices into the project, using more than 20,000 tons of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) from a previous interstate project as a sub-base material for the new construction. The RAP had been stockpiled on site in anticipation of the project, which saved approximately 10,000 gallons of fuel that otherwise would have been used to transfer the material to the site. The owner and pilots report being very pleased with the high-quality asphalt runway.
