Barbour County Chamber recognizes members of the month
Dr. Pete J. Palko III and Delbert Weaver are the Barbour County Chamber of Commerce Members of the Month for March.
Palko is a doctor of osteopathic medicine at Myers Clinic in Philippi. Weaver is the superintendent of Arch Coal’s Wolf Run Sentinel Mine.
Palko was born at Princeton and grew up at Bartley. He is an alumnus of Big Creek High School in War and a graduate of West Virginia Institute of Technology with a major in biology. He earned his Doctor of Osteopathy at West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg. He has been associated the the Myers Clinic since September 2006.
The Myers Clinic, he said, is proud to serve the citizens of Barbour and surrounding counties. Other current health care providers include Dr. Cecil T. Holbert, Amanda Hile and Susan Ketchem. Walk-in and scheduled appointments are welcome, and more information is available by calling 304-457-2800, ext. 201.
Weaver is a graduate of Philip Barbour High School. He started a career in coal mining when he became a roof bolter operator at Kitt Energy in 1979. From 1985 to 2000, he was a shift foreman for Anker Energy, when he joined Consol Energy as a section foreman. He became a mine foreman for the International Coal Group in 2002 and was appointed by Arch Coal to his current position as superintendent in 2009.
Weaver said the Sentinel Mine Complex in Barbour County operates seven days a week and employs roughly 340 individuals. The underground mine produces 1.8 million tons of raw coal annually. In the last 24 months, he said, Sentinel employed 30 inexperienced coal miners, giving new opportunity to individuals seeking a career in the coal industry.
During 2012, the Sentinel Deep Mine worked more than 2 million man hours, roughly the last three years, without a lost-time accident. During that period, the mine received two prestigious safety awards, The Mountaineer Guardian Award and the Holmes Safety Award.
“Our goal at the sentinel Complex is to continue our safety success, providing our customers with the best product possible wile being a good neighbor within our community,” Weaver said.
