Concert, guitar workshop set at Arts Center
The Randolph County Community Arts Center will present Ernie Hawkins in concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
Hawkins, an internationally renowned acoustic guitar virtuoso, plays and sings blues, ragtime and gospel. His riveting music springs mostly from the early 1900s East Coast Piedmont and Texas steel-string flattop fingerpicking styles. In performance, Hawkins captivates the audience by infusing his articulate and dynamic personal style while communicating the tradition of this beautiful and complex style.
A Pittsburgh native, this acoustic blues guitarist has become master of the Piedmont tradition, following in the footsteps of great musicians such as Blind Willie McTell, and Hawkins’ teacher, the Rev. Gary Davis. These blues giants live again in his adventurous finger-work. Playing and teaching throughout the world, Hawkins has become one of the best, and last, living legacies to this rich musical tradition.
Hawkins will lead a guitar workshop at 7 p.m. Friday. This blues guitar workshop is open to community musicians. The cost to attend is $10. This workshop is free for the Arts Center’s Lab Band students and is sponsored in part by Outreach Program sponsors- Parrack Insurance, AES Laurel Mountain, El Gran Sabor and the West Virginia Division of Culture and History/West Virginia Commission on the Arts.
Hawkins’ concert is part of the Evening Concert Series. Tickets are available in advance by calling 304-637-2355 or they can be purchased at the door.
