Homecoming events coming to Valley Head

The Valley Head community will host its annual Homecoming May 24 to 26.

Coronation of the 2013 Valley Head Homecoming Queen will be 7 p.m. May 24 in the Valley Head Elementary School gym. The 2012 Homecoming Queen, Courtney Jones, a junior at Tygarts Valley High School, is the daughter of Bill and Shannon Jones. She will crown this year’s queen.

There are seven area girls in the Homecoming Queen contest.

Brianna Beverage, a sophomore at TVHS, is the daughter of Brian and Amanda Beverage.

Megan Crumm, a sophomore at TVHS, is the daughter of Hank and Kathy Crumm.

Crystal Mallow, a sophomore at TVHS, is the daughter of Frank and Bernadette Mallow.

Leila Matthew, a sophomore at TVHS, is the daughter of Kip and Nicole Matthew.

Tara Michele Sharp, a freshman at TVHS, is the daughter of Kevin and Michele Sharp.

Victoria Vandevender, a freshman at TVHS, is the daughter of Jimmy and Shaina Vandevender.

Falicity Wallace, a sophomore at TVHS, is the daughter of Christel Goody.

Escorts for the girls will include John Beale, son of Mike and Bonnie Fike; Steven Demyan, son of Frank and Debbie Demyan; Nathan Haney, son of Mark and Roxann Haney; Brandon Pritt, son of Jeff and Cheryl Pritt; and Matthew Samples, son of Mike and Cheryl Samples.

The Crown Bearer this year will be Aden Plymale, a student at Valley Head Elementary School. The Flower Girl for the coronation will be Chloe Tolson, a student at Valley Head Elementary School.

The Homecoming Opening Ceremony will be at 7 p.m. May 24. Winners of the annual art and essay contests will be announced. Prizes will be awarded at the ceremony. The 2013 Valley Head Homecoming Junior Miss Valley Head, Little Miss Valley Head and Tiny Miss Valley Head will be announced.

Homecoming T-shirts, featuring this year’s design, will be on sale at the gym during the coronation ceremony. Door prizes will be given away.

Saturday events will include a pancake and sausage breakfast at the Valley Head Fire House from 7 a.m. until 11 a.m.; craft and bake sales; live music; pictures on display at Newt Wood’s Store windows; horse shoe pitch (doubles only) and hawk and knife throw (details available at the hot dog stand on Newt Wood’s Store Porch); baking contest at Nancy Riggleman’s garage starting at 9 a.m.; a yard judging contest; Memorial Wall pictures will be on display around 11 a.m. at the corner of Newt Wood’s Store Porch; hot dog sale; easy pick game; homecoming grand feature parade at 1 p.m.; balloon launch at the Post Office porch immediately after the parade; auction of the baking contest winning cakes and pies on Newt Wood’s Store Porch after the balloon launch; a Celebrating Home bingo at the Valley Head Firehouse at 3 p.m.; and a gospel sing at the Valley Head Methodist Church at 6:30 p.m. Area fire departments and the Tygarts Valley High School Bulldog Marching Band will take part in the parade.

Sunday events will include pictures on display at the Valley Head Elementary School playground until early evening. The 2013 Homecoming will close with a memorial service and awards ceremony at the Valley Head School Gym at 3 p.m. This service will honor area residents who have passed away during the previous year.
