Adaland to stage Civil War fashion show, afternoon tea

A History Alive presentation by Mary Todd Lincoln at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 27 will kick off an afternoon on the sideyard pavilion at Adaland Mansion at Philippi. Adaland’s visit from the wife of the 16th president of the United States is part of West Virginia’s sesquicentennial celebration and will emphasize the significance of this area to the Civil War period.

The first lady’s visit is sponsored by the W.Va. Humanities Council and is free to the public.

Following Mary Todd Lincoln’s visit, guests are invited to enjoy an afternoon buffet tea and a Civil War fashion show on the sideyard pavilion.

Both tea and fashion show require reservations that may be made by calling 304-457-2415 or 304-457-1587.

The afternoon tea, a social event that may well have taken place in the historic mansion in its early years, will begin at about 1:15 p.m. or immediately following the Mary Todd Lincoln presentation.

Guests will have traditional tea sandwiches, cookies, cakes, Adaland’s signature peach ice tea and hot teas prior to the Civil War fashion show.

Numerous men’s and women’s outfits are part of “The Total Look: 1861-1865, Past and Present.” This year’s fashion show will be narrated by Sylvia Hayhurst, a faculty member of Pierpont Community College and an experienced fashion show coordinator.

It will include information on the historic background of the clothing along with the models’ interpretations of the historically accurate clothing they are wearing.

In addition to her commentary on the clothing, Ms. Hayhurst will also discuss proper etiquette of the period including proper introductions, conversations and the use of proper language.

Combined with the clothing narration, the afternoon sharing of Civil War period information should provide guests a fascinating history lesson of this time period.

“We are so pleased to have Sylvia, a frequent visitor to Adaland Mansion, back with us this sesquicentennial year. Her work has been enjoyed by hundreds of Adaland guests in the past. Whether you are interested in history, interested in period clothing, or just like the social interactions that occur over a cup of tea, we hope to see you Saturday, July 27,” says an Adaland spokesperson.
