J.F. Allen Company wins safety award
On May 18 at the 30th Annual State Council Meeting of the Holmes Safety Association, the J.F. Allen Company’s Aggregates Quarry was presented with a Certificate of Achievement for 2012, on the accomplishment of successfully maintaining a record of over 1.5 million man hours without a lost time accident.
The Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association is known for recognizing individuals and organizations who have made a difference in safety and health. It is a nonprofit organization that began in 1916 to promote health and safety in the mining industry and consists of representatives from federal and state governments, mining organizations and labor.
“The veteran miners at our quarries are crucial to the success of our accomplishment,” a J.F. Allen press release stated. “They help the new, inexperienced miners understand the dangers of the quarry. With the experience under their tool belts, the veterans teach the new recruits through consistent attention to detail and safety.
“Our success comes from reiteration, constant training and team work,” the release stated. “We have two families, our ‘families at home’and of course our ‘quarry family.’ Sometimes we wonder if each of us have an impact on safety and then we are reminded of our record of safe hours and realize that each and every one of us has had a part in that success. One of our sayings is, ‘You don’t always know the accidents you prevent you only know for sure the ones you don’t. The efforts of our men and women are nothing less then miraculous.”
