Public invited to participate in Augusta program

Augusta Heritage Center is celebrating its 41st year, and the five-week summer program is in full swing up at Davis & Elkins College. Augusta is best known for its intensive weeklong workshops that focus on traditional music, dance, craft and folklore. The program kicked off last week with Cajun and Early Country Music Week. During Augusta’s summer program there are many opportunities for locals to participate each week.

On Tuesday and Thursday evenings every week, now through Aug. 10, there are concerts held in the Hermanson Auditorium in the Myles Center for the Arts on D&E’s campus. These concerts feature the instructors of each week and headliners including Dale Ann Bradley, Joe Newberry, Mac Benford and Robbie O’Connell, Brittany Haas and many more.

All of the instructors are the best in their musical genre and come from all over the world to teach at Augusta Heritage Center.

Concert dates are today for Blues and Swing Week; July 23 and July 26 for Irish Week; July 30 and Aug. 1 for Bluegrass Week; and Aug. 6 and Aug. for Old-Time, Vocal and Dance Week. Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and $7 for youth through high school. D&E College staff, students and faculty get in free. Tickets go on sale at 7 p.m., doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m.

Following each concert there is a dance held in the pavilion and concert attendees get in free to that dance.

In addition, there are evening dances held almost every night at the dance pavilion behind the Myles Center for the Arts. Most dances get underway at 8 p.m. Sunday through Friday. However, on Friday, the dance will start at 9 p.m. Admission is $6 for adults, $4 for seniors and teenagers and children 12 and under get in free.

Also, each week there are evening mini-courses that run each night from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. where you can take classes in designing an Aran sweater, beginning clogging, bluegrass harmonica, coal mining songs and songs of work and freedom and many more. These classes run $55 for the week.
