Slew of summer activities scheduled at Adaland
While we in the Northern Hemisphere may be in the midst of the sultry days of summer, the lazy, hazy days of dog days, there is nothing lazy or hazy about the next month’s activities ready for the public on the 22 acres of Adaland Mansion at Philippi, Philippi’s lovingly-restored 1870 hill top home on Rt. 76 four miles north of downtown Philippi.
The summer’s favorite “who dunit?” returns to the pavilion on Friday and Saturday, August 9-10, when West Virginia playwright Karen Vuranch pulls into town with one of her hilarious, audience-participating mystery plays, part of Adaland’s Summer Murder Mystery Dinner Theater.
A loyal following has been built up over the years for this summertime favorite. Vuranch uses local thespians to cast her shows, and the actors and actresses frolic through the broad framework of a plot that always involves a murder early in the play. During the progression of the storyline, the audience begins to realize that any of the characters could be the murderer. That’s when the fun begins with the audience spending the last half of the evening questioning the characters whose answers sometimes bring broad guffaws from the audience.
Audience members vote on “who dunit?” and then learn the identify of the true murderer.
The August 9-10 dinner that leads up to the mystery performance will be one of Adaland’s traditional buffet dinners full of ham with raisin sauce and baked chicken, a variety of side vegetables, and a dessert table array of sweet delicacies that Adaland’s own Lucy Williamson will create especially for our guests.
Because this event always fills up quickly, Adaland encourages making reservations early by calling 304-457-2415. Tickets are $40 for adults and $20 for children and include the buffet and the mystery theater.
On Sunday, Aug. 18, Adaland, in partnership with the Barbour County Community Garden Market and the Appalachian Farm and Research Center, will host its third dinner in the Celebrate Local! dinner series. The series, one of Adaland’s new events for the 2013 season, is a celebration of local/regional produce and meats with five gourmet dinners prepared by five local/regional chefs extraordinaire!
W.Va. American Culinary Federation’s Chef of the Year for 2012 and 2012, Jay Mahoney, is the featured chef for the Aug. 18 dinner. Chef Mahoney will be serving a luscious summertime buffet featuring chilled seafood gazpacho, crimson lentil and grain salad, tomato and farm bread salad, a grilled vegetable platter, peppercorn seared pork tenderloin, spinach pasta lasagna, pancetta and Swiss quiche, focaccia, fresh fruit tart, cinnamon almond flan and milk chocolate caramel creme brulee.
This buffet extravaganza will seat guests at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Reservations are $25 and may be made by calling 304-457-2415.
August’s final Adaland event is a Sunday afternoon tea at 2 p.m Sunday, Aug. 25. A lovely afternoon tea of scones, tea sandwiches, fruit and desserts may be reserved for $18 by calling 304-457-2415.
