Anna Lena ‘Teen’ Shifflett

Anna Lena “Teen” Shifflett departed this life on Aug. 14, 2013, at the age of 87. She was born Jan. 8, 1926, a daughter of the late Herbert “Hub” and Pearl M. (Hoover) Bodkins. Teen was raised in Bemis, with her nine brothers and sisters Leslie, Elsie, Gladys, Lapel, Rose, Palley, Cecelia, Aubrey and Joe. Teen was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Maynard Shifflett, whom she married April 24, 1945, in Elkins. Also preceding her in death were her parents Herbert and Pearl, her brother, Leslie, and sisters Gladys, Palley and Cecelia and four brothers and sisters who died at birth or in early infancy.

Teen was a beautiful and soft-spoken woman with an adventuresome spirit who decided in 1943, along with sister Gladys and two friends, to enter the Ladies National Youth Administration War Production and Training Project in Arthurdale. She enrolled in welding classes at the school that lasted six weeks. After turning 18, she was hired at the Bethlehem Steel shipyards in Baltimore, Md., where she worked as a welder throughout World War II tacking ships’ doors, welding steel deck floors and other projects as assigned.

She was later employed for 26 years by Carr Lowrey Glass Company in Baltimore and retired from there in 1986. Teen and Maynard lived in Baltimore for many years, but their hearts were always in West Virginia. They purchased a weekend home along the Cheat River, next to the Shifflett family home, where they spent many relaxing weekends and holidays.

After retiring, they bought a second home in Elkins that was their permanent residence until their deaths. Between them, they had 15 brothers and sisters and many nieces and nephews, so they always had visitors and family to visit.

They were much loved by their family and friends. Teen’s family is deeply grateful to Iveagh Trust (Elkins) and Granville Manor (Parsons) for the excellent care and kindness provided to her during her illness. Thank you for all you did to keep her comfortable during her final months and weeks. Family and friends will be received at the Tomblyn Funeral Home, 45 Randolph Ave., Elkins, from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16, 2013. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17 from the Tomblyn Funeral Home Chapel. Speaker of the memorial service will be Tate Smith. Interment will follow in the American Legion’s Little Arlington Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Care Corporation, PO Box 760, Arthurdale, WV 26520 in memory of Mrs. Shifflett. The Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins is in charge of the arrangements for Anna Lena “Teen” Shifflett. Condolences may be expressed to the family at
