Annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s set for Sept. 21
Registration is currently open for the 2013 Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s, which will take place Saturday, Sept. 21 at Riverbend Park.
This annual event serves to unite the community in a movement to reclaim the future for the millions of Americans affected by Alzheimer’s disease through raising critical resources to support the local individuals and families who face this disease as well as supporting research funds to find a cure.
The local walk committee has set an ambitious goal to raise $15,000 for the Alzheimer’s Association, West Virginia Chapter. Registration for the Walk is free; however, participants are encouraged to raise $100 to earn a commemorative Walk to End Alzheimer’s T-shirt.
Teams and individual participants can register online at www.alz.org/wv or by calling 1-800-272-3900. Event day registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the walk kicks off at 10 a.m. The day will feature food, prizes and the opportunity to celebrate loved ones lost to this devastating disease while taking vital steps to end it.
Currently, every 68 seconds someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, and this growing epidemic is now the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death. As baby boomers age, the number of individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease will continue to escalate, increasing well beyond today’s more than 5 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s.
Whether participation in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s is personal, professional or a mix of both, the reason to walk is the same – to give hope to people living with the disease, their caregivers and loved ones. Alzheimer’s disease is progressive and debilitating, but the end of Alzheimer’s starts now.
The Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support and research. Starting in 1989, the Alzheimer’s Association mobilized millions of Americans in the Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk; now the Alzheimer’s Association is continuing to lead the way with the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Together, we can end Alzheimer’s – the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death.
The Alzheimer’s Association, West Virginia Chapter is the only voluntary health organization in West Virginia solely dedicated to providing education and support service to individuals with Alzheimer’s and other dementias, to their families and caregivers. The chapter serves all 55 counties in West Virginia and six counties in eastern Ohio.
