Church banquet recognizes seniors

The senior adult ministry, Young at Heart, of Elkins Church of God Family Worship Center held its annual Appreciation Banquet on Sept. 7 at the Glenmore campus.

Senior adult coordinator Janice Taylor said the event was an annual recognition and appreciation for the senior adults of the church.

Special recognition was given to seniors who were active in several of the ministries of the church. Awards were given to Donnie Coberly, Phoebe Ramsey, Carol Hudnall, Geraldine Simmons and Jim Taylor.

Specially made candy bars were given to all seniors with the inscription from Isaiah 46:4: “Even to your old age and gray hairs I am He, I am He who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you, I will sustain you and I will rescue you.”

Hazel Hart Hanger was also recognized with many gifts at the banquet and also during the church service Sunday morning. After serving more than 50 years as the Sunday School secretary, she has retired because of poor eyesight. She has attended Elkins Church of God all her life. She is 96 years old. Mrs. Hanger is a direct descendant of John Hart, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

Her father was chosen from among hundreds by Northan R. Gould, instructor of art at Davis & Elkins College some years ago as a study for a portrait of “The West Virginian.”

She was married to Virgil Hanger, who is deceased. He was a professor of music and taught string and instrumental music throughout West Virginia and also in churches.

The banquet meal was catered by Sharon Cooper. Several of the young adults of the church helped serve, including Naomi West, Adam West, Wendy Thompson, Sarah Pennington, Chelsey Toms, Kendyl Taylor, Lisa Ketterman and Steve Ketterman. Music was provided by John Taylor and Charlotte Corley.

A skit was performed by Joy Hosteller, Barbara Dilley, Darlene McCauley, Phoebe Ramsey and Carol Hudnall.
