Arts Center announces October classes

New classes, workshops and camps begin in October at the Randolph County Community Arts Center.

– Christmas Craft and Card Workshop

Share the joy of the season with gifts from the heart in this five-week workshop for adults. Students will create at least one craft and card each week. Some of the card styles include: coffee cards, cut paper cards and watercolor cards. The class will meet on Mondays, beginning Oct. 28, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.. This five-week course is open to adults and costs $75.

– After School Art Club

Diana Vera will offer a cornucopia of expressive arts: mixed media and movement; creative writing and song; drama and visual arts – all spiced with a global flavor! The After School Art Club will meet each Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30-5:30 p.m. beginning Tuesday, Oct. 19. Buses from North, Midland and Third Ward elementary schools will drop students at the Arts Center. Students not riding the bus should arrive for class by 4:15 p.m. A member of the Arts Center staff will greet students at the bus. Each afternoon will begin with a short snack followed by an art activity. After School Art Club will begin its second session on Tuesday, Oct. 29. The cost is $300.

– Pottery: Hand and Wheel

This class is designed for beginning artists as well as experienced potters. This course is offered in three different six-week sessions: 1-4 p.m. for teens and adults 6 and up; 4-5:30 p.m. for teens ages 12-18; and 6-8 p.m. for teens and adults. The six-week course will begin Wednesday, Oct. 30. The cost is $100.

– Watercolor Workshops

Join artist Ken Waddell for an exploration of beginning and intermediate techniques in representational watercolor painting.The workshop will meet from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Thursdays, including today, Oct. 10, Oct. 17 and Oct. 24. The workshop is open to teens and adults. The cost is $40 per session.

– Intro to Screen Printing

Instructor Kevin Woodcock will guide students through the process of learning basic screen printing. Students will begin with an introduction followed with creating a stencil and perfecting the print to a finished product. The class will meet Thursdays, beginning Oct. 31, from 6-8 p.m. The class is open to adults and costs $100.

– Fiber Arts Club

Artist Jennifer Wagoner will introduce tweens and teens to an array of fiber arts, from knitting to papermaking, stitching to basketry. Projects include papermaking, dip-dyed basketry, hand-stitched soft sculptures and more. This six-week course begins Thursday, Oct. 31, from 4-6 p.m. The class is open to middle and high school students. The cost is $70.

– Hollow Sculpture for Teens

Jennifer Wagoner will lead students in creating a single, large hollow sculpture in this class. This course will teach the design process, offer a “behind the scenes” look at ceramics and leave students with a portfolio-worthy piece. This six-week course begins Friday, Nov. 1 from 5-7 p.m. The class is open to teens and costs $100.

Bat Mobiles

Jennifer Wagoner will teach basic pattern and hand-stitching skills to create a fun, seasonal project. The end result is a dangling mobile full of spunky bats! The workshop is open to students ages 8 to 12 years old, and will be Saturday, Oct. 12 from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $35.

– Happy Birthday, Artist! Series

Artist Kadra Casseday continues celebrating the birthday of a famous artist in the month of October with her workshop on Saturday, Oct. 19. Kadra will cover a brief history of the artist and lead children through a multimedia project created in that particular theme. The workshop runs from 10-11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19. The cost of the workshop is $20.

– Decorating Gourds: Baskets, Bowls and Birdhouses

Dried gourds make beautiful and unique baskets, bowls and birdhouses. Join artist and teacher Maggi Rhudy as she shows students how to create a one-of-a-kind container and birdhouses for decoration or practical use. The workshop runs from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. with one hour for lunch on Saturday, Oct. 26. The workshop is open to teens and adults, and the cost is $60.

– Fun with Polymer Clay

Students will learn caning techniques – how to create pictures and patterns with polymer clay from instructor Melinda Shafer. Join us either Oct. 19-26 from 10 a.m. to noon for this great tutorial on working with such a versatile medium! The workshop is open to tweens, teens and adults. The cost of the workshop is $25.
