Davis Memorial Hospital celebrating women’s health

On Saturday, Oct. 12, Davis Memorial Hospital will host a Well Woman Screening, providing a number of free and discounted preventative health tests geared just to women. In addition, another unique event for women who are pregnant or planning to get pregnant is scheduled for the same day at Women’s HealthCare. This event, called Baby Day, will take place from 1-3 p.m.

This year’s screenings will be held at two different locations on the DMH campus in Elkins. Discounted blood tests will be held in the outpatient lab area on the first floor of Davis Memorial Hospital. Tests will be offered from 7-9:30 a.m. and appointments may be made by calling 304-637-3861.

Free pap tests and clinical breast exams will be provided at the office of Women’s HealthCare at 801 Gorman Ave. from 7:30 until 11 a.m. Pap tests are for women who have not had a pap test in the last 12 months and who have not had a hysterectomy. Appointments must be made ahead by calling 304-637-3185.

“It’s very important that women make time for these life-saving screenings,” said Anne Banfield, M.D., and director of Women’s Health Services at DMH. “Oftentimes women coordinate the care of their children and families but neglect their own needs. Well Woman Day is an opportunity for them to have a number of valuable tests performed at one time.”

The Women’s Health Blood Profile is $30 and includes a complete blood count, comprehensive metabolic panel and lipid levels (HDL and LDL cholesterol and triglycerides). Additional blood tests available that day include thyroid ($5); Hemoglobin A1C, ($25); C-Reactive protein inflammatory, ($15); C-Reactive protein cardiac, ($15); blood typing with RH factor, ($15); Vitamin B12, folate and iron ($20); and Vitamin D 25-Hydroxy, ($45).

Overnight fasting is required for accurate results. Test results will be sent to the individual’s home.

Guests can have a free blood pressure check at either location.

As part of DMH’s recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is celebrated throughout October, guests can expect to find plenty of information at the event about breast health, including the digital mammography services available at DMH. These services are accredited by the American College of Radiology, which represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety, and is awarded only to facilities meeting the ACR Practice Guidelines and Technical Standards.

Baby Day will feature information and helpful resources for women and families who are expecting. This includes the chance to speak with OB/GYN physicians, patient educators and other medical practitioners about a variety of topics relating to having babies. Families will also have the opportunity to tour the Family Birthing Center of Davis Memorial Hospital. For more information about either of these Women’s events, call 304-637-3139, or visit www.davishealthsystem.org or www.facebook.com/dhswv.
