New flu vaccine offered today at drive-by flu clinic

St. Joseph’s Hospital will offer the new quadrivalent flu vaccine at the first of its drive-by flu clinics today, Wednesday, Oct. 9, between the hours of 11 a. .and 1 p.m. Consent forms will be signed and the shot will be given while individuals remain in their vehicles.

Walk-in clinics are also scheduled in the main lobby of the hospital on Wednesday, Oct. 16 from 8-10 a.m. and Wednesday, Oct. 23 from 4 until 6 p.m. This new flu vaccine will also be available at the Buckhannon Rotary Blood Screenings on Oct. 26 and Nov. 2 at the Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School only.

This year’s shot will be the quadrivalent vaccine, which for the first time, will guard against four strains of flu rather than the usual three. These four-in-one vaccines will protect against two common Type A strains called H1N1 and H3N2, and the two distinct strains of Type B.

There are no out-of-pocket expenses for flu shots for those with a valid Medicare card. Cost for all others is $30. The vaccination is extremely important for young children, people 65 and older, pregnant women, people with existing medical conditions and those people who are in contact with those at greatest risk. Vaccinations will be available at the clinics for anyone over the age of 12; for vaccinations for children under the age of 12, please see your family physician.
