Smith named aquatics director at D&E
Davis & Elkins College Head Men’s and Women’s Swimming Coach Nick Smith has been appointed aquatics director, a position in which he oversees all aspects of the pool area.
As aquatics director, Smith is in charge of coordinating with outside groups wishing to use the pool, hiring and maintaining the lifeguard staff, organizing swim lessons and overseeing the upkeep of the swimming pool facility, including the locker rooms.
“The pool area has had many welcome changes over the past year,” Smith said. “We hope to continue improving the facility as well as offer new opportunities for community involvement. We have already more than doubled the amount of pool hours open to the public and we look forward to adding more opportunities in the future.”
Smith previously worked in the D&E Admission Office. He recently entered his second season of collegiate coaching and will continue in that post in addition to his new duties. Under Smith’s leadership, the 2012-2013 swim teams set 18 school records.
Prior to coming to D&E, Smith taught AP Government and U.S. History at Spring Valley High School in Huntington. He established the swimming program at Spring Valley and was the school’s first swim coach. During his tenure at Spring Valley, Smith coached 18 state qualifiers, five collegiate athletes and one national qualifier.
Smith earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and social studies education from Marshall University in 2008. He also was a member of the Marshall Swim Team and completed certified lifeguard training. He swam competitively for nine years for summer league, club, high school and collegiate teams.
He is also the worship leader at First Baptist Church of Elkins.
The newly renovated pool area will be dedicated during Homecoming Weekend, Oct. 18-20. The facility upgrades include a new roof and ventilation system, digital pace clocks for lap swimmers, an electronic scoreboard and renovations to the men’s and women’s locker rooms.
