WVWC professor honored by United Methodist Church
Dr. Pam Miltenberger Wovchko, chair and associate professor of mathematics and computer science at West Virginia Wesleyan College, was recently honored with the General Board of Higher Education of the United Methodist Church’s Exemplary Teaching Award at the College’s Founders Day ceremony on Oct. 11.
Presented annually, the award recognizes the accomplishments of an extraordinary teacher, one whose professional competence, dedication to the growth of students, and commitment to the highest academic standards combine to create a campus environment in which learning flourishes.
Wovchko teaches introductory and advanced courses in mathematics at Wesleyan. She graduated summa cum laude in 1995 with a B.S. degree in mathematics and secondary education. She completed an M.S. in mathematics at West Virginia University and a Ph.D. in Educational Mathematics at the University of Northern Colorado.
Elected as vice chair of the faculty, Wovchko has served on many committees including Faculty Senate, Admission and Academic Standing Council, Calendar Committee, Judicial Board and faculty evaluation and search committees. She sponsors the Wesleyan math honorary organization and has hosted several holiday dinners and Pi Day events at her home.
Her commitment to education is obvious, and her enthusiasm for mathematics is compelling. She uses interactive and creative approaches to teaching and learning such as “Jeopardy!” games in statistics courses and “Best Bluffer Contests” in her proofs course. She also modernized calculus by incorporating mathematical software and a technology course.
Through a collaborative Mathematics and Science Partnership Grant, Wovchko has developed activities and coordinated workshops for 30 regional mathematics and special education teachers. She was elected chair of the Allegheny Mountain Section of the MAA and will coordinate research meetings and events for mathematicians in Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia during 2013-2015.
Dr. Boyd Creasman, vice president for academic affairs, presented the General Board of Higher Education of the United Methodist Church’s Exemplary Teaching Award to Dr. Pam Wovchko at the Founders Day ceremony.
