Adaland set for holiday activities, fun
Jack-o’-lanterns, turkey and pumpkin pie, pine garland and red velvet bows … the progression of the seasons during the fall moves quickly from one to the other with the lines of distinction sometimes blurring. We all know the trouble the retail world has separating these seasons because we see children’s Halloween costumes, ceramic turkeys and blinking Santas all hitting the shelves at about the same time.
Well, we at Adaland do know the distinctions among the seasons and do know how to share the celebrations of each one with you, our visitors, both seasoned and new. And with this column, we invite all of you to join us for the 2013 celebration of fall, Thanksgiving, and Christmas!
The Transformation: Adaland’s first major event of the season of celebrations is the transformation of Philippi’s 1870 restored mansion from its daily stately and charming personality to its gay, celebratory personality. How does this transformation take place?
We ask for volunteers from the community to join us the first week of November to help carry boxes from the attic to the rooms to be decorated, to unpack these boxes, to put up trees, to string lights and tinsel on the trees, to add bulbs, greenery, and ribbon to mantels and tables, and to freshen up the mansion for her holiday guests.
If you would like to join us any of the days during the first week of November to help perform this transformation, please give us a call at 304-457-2415 or 304-457-1587. We can use help one hour, one day, or every day of this week. Bring your bagged lunch and join in the fun of the work behind the scenes that transforms the mansion to a winter wonderland.
Holiday Teas: This season we are offering three different teas at Adaland Mansion, something for everyone who enjoys this delightful English tradition with Adaland’s own creative twists. Adaland’s specialty teas capitalize on the combination of a leisurely afternoon tea with mouth-watering finger foods accompanied by autumn-warming teas.
Join us on Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. for a Holiday Buffet Tea. This tea is served from the beautifully decorated formal dining room table with guests seated at their own festive tables in the red dining rooms. Guests will be treated to a variety of tea sandwiches, small pastries, fresh fruit, and hot teas. Call for reservations for this afternoon buffet tea at one of the phone numbers given above. Seats are $18 for adults.
On Dec. 8 at 2 p.m., guests will be treated to a Christmas High Tea. Tea hostesses will serve guests four courses of scrumptious finger foods beginning with scones, moving to fresh fruits and tarts, then onto tea sandwiches and savories, and ending with a variety of sweet offerings that complete the afternoon sojourn. A variety of hot teas are always available. This $25 for adults holiday treat requires reservations by calling one of the phone numbers provided above. This holiday event, which includes a brief history of tea and tea traditions, is the perfect way to treat your special someone.
Also offered Dec. 8, but this time at 5 p.m., is this season’s Christmas Royal Tea. For this $30 adult reservation, tea hostesses will provide a brief history of tea and tea traditions while serving guests five/six courses that feature the scones, fresh fruits and tarts, tea sandwiches and savories, and desserts of a high tea plus a larger variety of savories including the Adaland crowd-pleasing artichoke dip. The sweets course also adds items to delight the tea guests. Besides the Adaland signature chocolate, this specialty tea adds a complimentary glass of champagne as the grand finale of the Royal Tea.
Holiday Buffet Dinners: Four delectable buffet dinners are on this season’s celebration calendar.
The first of four buffet dinners is the Thanksgiving Buffet Dinner Nov. 24 from 1 to 4:45 p.m. This Thanksgiving table will serve up ham and turkey with traditional trimmings, a variety of sides, salad with Adaland’s signature dressing, pumpkin pie and other dessert specialties known well by Adaland’s frequent diners and a promised treat for new diners. Reservations for this holiday celebration are $20 for adults and $10 for children plus a 10 percent house gratuity. Groups of up to 10 can be seated.
Adaland’s house cook will add to her Thanksgiving buffet with two Christmas buffet dinners. These dinners are Dec. 1 and Dec. 15 with seatings from 1 to 4:45 p.m. Special Christmas dishes are on the menu that will include seasonal meats, a variety of vegetables and salad, and Christmas desserts as only Lucy Williamson can bake. Reservations for the Christmas buffets are the same price as the Thanksgiving buffet.
Closing out the 2013 season at Adaland Mansion will be a very special New Year’s Eve Buffet Dinner with seatings at 5 and 7 p.m. This Dec. 31 dinner will be prepared by a guest chef and will include a very special menu created by the chef for Adaland’s guests. Reservations for this dinner are $40 for adults and include a complimentary glass of champagne.
