Choral Society concerts slated

The Buckhannon Choral Society will present two fall concerts featuring folk music at St. Matthew United Methodist Church on Friday at 7 p.m. and Philippi Baptist Church on Sunday at 3 p.m. The concerts are free to the public, with donations appreciated.

To many people, folk music is the music of our childhoods, of our elementary music class, of Sunday morning – lullabies, humorous ditties, ballads, wacky tunes and hymns and spirituals sung by grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins.

The choir will present unique and upbeat arrangements of “Polly Wolly Doodle,” “Fiddle-I-Fee,” “Skip to My Lou,” “Old Dan Tucker” and “Buffalo Gals.” Additionally, the choir will perform beautiful arrangements of “Simple Gifts,” “The Nightingale,” “The Water is Wide,” “Shenandoah”and “Every Night When the Suns Goes In.” The program will close with “My Home Among the Hills,” written by E. W. James for West Virginia Wesleyan College.

The choir is accompanied by pianist Jeanne DeFoe and under the direction of Stephen Benson.

The Buckhannon Choral Society is a nonprofit corporation organized for the purpose of providing public performances of choral music in the Buckhannon area. Live music concerts are presented for the enjoyment, enhancement and promotion of the arts for the citizens of this region of West Virginia.

The Buckhannon Choral Society is operated under the auspices of a volunteer board of directors comprised of group members and interested community members.
