Donkey basketball game to benefit Elkins Middle School

ELKINS – The staff of Elkins Middle School is planning an evening of “hee haw” fun with the purpose of raising funds for the school.

School secretary Julie Likens and teacher Kelly Vandevender said the school will host a “donkey basketball” game at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 6 at the school.

“There will be two teams,” Vandevender said. “Team Mr. Carr will face off against Team Mrs. Roth. We think the event will be a fun time.”

Team Mr. Carr will be led by Principal Rich Carr, while Team Mrs. Roth will be headed by teacher Dee Roth.

Vandevender said the game will raise funds for the Elkins Middle School Parent Teacher Student Organization, as well as benefit the Elkins Middle School Shelter Club, which helps out at the Randolph County Animal Shelter.

“We chose to do something like this because it is a fun winter activity,” Likens said. “The students love to see the staff compete against one another.”

Vandevender said the PTSO uses the funds for student rewards.

“Their goal is to give back to the students for their good attendance,” Vandevender said. “Students that attend, cooperate and participate reap the rewards.”

Concessions will be available during the game and at half-time. Kids age 12 and under may ride the donkeys for $1.

Likens said the games are four-on-four. The plays can either ride or lead the donkeys, whichever works best. Donkeys paarticipating in the event include Snuffy, Honey Pot, Beetle Bomb, Elvis, Kilroy, Thunder Ball, Super Stupid and Rigor Mortis.

Advance tickets for the game are $6 and are available by calling the Elkins Middle School at 304-636-9176. Tickets at the door are $8. Children under 6 will be admitted at no charge.
