Woman’s club reviews books
Three books, including “The Midwife of Hope River,” by author Patricia Harman, were reviewed during the November dinner meeting of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, West Virginia Woman’s Club of Elkins, at First United Methodist Church in Elkins.
Harman, who has served on the faculties of Ohio State University, Case Western Reserve University and West Virginia University, describes Appalachian lay-midwife work during the Great Depression.
She read several selections describing the people of the era, and she noted that her books have been particularly popular in West Virginia and Western Maryland.
Approximately 60 club members attended the dinner meeting, and membership Co-Chairmen Jane Lawson and Cary Hopwood introduced several new members for initiation.
Those joining were Carolyn Capelli, the Rev. Brenda Forren, Sylvia Jeanne Johnson, Jo Linger and Linda Pifer.
