Community dinner plans underway

As Thanksgiving celebrations wind down, Christmas celebrations are beginning and the coordinators for the free annual Community Christmas Dinner are finalizing the details. This year’s dinner will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Christmas day at Chapel Hill Church in Engle Hall on Kanawha Street in

Buckhannon.

Tables will be set with linen tablecloths and the menu will feature roasted turkey, baked ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, green beans, baked cinnamon apples and other delicious items, including dessert, coffee and iced tea.

Do you have a desire to become involved? Volunteers are needed, whether it is cooking, serving, washing dishes or delivering food. Shifts on Christmas Day are 8 to 10:30 a.m., 10:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Volunteer dinner deliveries are from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m.

If you want to deliver meals, your vehicle will need to accommodate one or more coolers and be willing to drive in Upshur County area on dry, wet or snow-covered roads.

Volunteers should be able to stand on their feet and able to work in a busy kitchen and need to sign up in advance. We also would love to have someone play Christmas music on the piano.

Not able to volunteer but want to be support the event? Tax-deductible financial contributions can be made payable to the Upshur Parish House and mailed to 68 College Ave., Buckhannon, WV 26201. Please note on the check, “2013 Christmas Dinner.”

The Parish House offers dinners for delivery in Upshur County for people who are not able to come to the church. Deliveries will be approximately from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. depending on the location and number of drivers.

Due to weather and road conditions, we may not be able to deliver to all locations. Take outs are also available and need to call in advance.

Homemade desserts are also needed. Desserts are accepted at Chapel Hill Church Dec. 23 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. or on Christmas day after 8 a.m.

Please use a container that will not be returned, and all desserts must be clearly labeled with your name, phone number and type of dessert. Sugar-free and gluten free desserts are also needed.

A new dedicated voicemail has been set up specifically for the annual dinner, 304-918-4423, to leave a detailed message.

To volunteer, leave a message from Dec. 13 through Dec. 23. To request meal delivery or take-out, call from Dec. 18 to Dec. 23.

Please note all calls to Parish House will be directed to call the new voicemail number and a volunteer will return the call.
